Sanders addresses overflow

The University of Chicago Annual Report describes UChicago's significant progress on a number of new initiatives over the last fiscal year, while providing an overview of our finances. These initiatives reflect a commitment to our enduring values of open and rigorous inquiry. At the same time they reflect the ambitions of the University community to see these values manifest in new and innovative ways.

College publications

Various groups in the College produce a number of College publications throughout the year, ranging from quick current-event updates to deep historical essays.

Aims of Education addresses

Every year since 1961, a University of Chicago faculty member has been invited to address students in the College regarding their view on the aims of a liberal education. In 1962 the Aims of Education Address was added to Orientation Week and officially became a tradition for incoming students. The address encourages students to reflect on the purpose and definition of education as they embark upon their collegiate years.

Convocation addresses

The very first convocation address was given by our first head of history, Hermann Eduard von Holst, and was titled “The Need of Universities in the United States.” Five of the first eleven convocation addresses at the University of Chicago examined, in one manner or another, the nature of universities and their role in society. Since the beginning, the convocation address has shown a persistent focus on issues of substance rather than benign, and perhaps occasionally welcomed, advice for graduating students. Each address is, in one way or another, about the power of ideas and the central, essential, place they hold at the University of Chicago.

The Nora and Edward Ryerson Lectures

The Ryerson Lectures grew out of a 1972 bequest to the University by Nora and Edward L. Ryerson, a former Chairman of the Board. It has become a "hallmark of the University, " said Hugo Sonnenschein, President Emeritus and the Adam Smith Distinguished Service Professor in Economics and the College, because of its "rich tradition in celebrating the work of our faculty." It honors excellence in academic pursuits and the "high aspirations we hold for ourselves as a community of scholars." The faculty selects each Ryerson Lecturer based on a consensus that a particular scholar has made research contributions of lasting significance. In return, the Ryerson Lecturer is asked to reflect on his or her intellectual life and work.

President Zimmer's speeches & publications

President Robert J. Zimmer is the author of two books, Ergodic Theory and Semisimple Groups (1984) and Essential Results of Functional Analysis (1990), and more than 80 mathematical research articles. Prior to his appointment as President, Zimmer was a University of Chicago faculty member and administrator for more than two decades specializing in the mathematical fields of geometry, particularly ergodic theory, Lie groups, and differential geometry.

Reports on University Disciplinary Actions

Annually, the Council of the University Senate asks Campus and Student Life to provide a report of all student disciplinary proceedings, as required by actions taken by the Council on May 23, 1970, and June 8, 1976. Reports covering 1999–2000 to 2006–07 are available in the University Record archive.

Reports of the Office of the Provost

The Office of the Provost develops a number of initiatives, including accessibility improvements on campus, child care, diversity, women’s leadership, and work-life integration, just to name some.

Reports of the Independent Review Committee for the University of Chicago Police Department

The Independent Review Committee for the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) examines complaints against the UCPD involving charges of excessive force, violation of rights, and abusive language. Composed of faculty members, staff, students, and members of the community, the Independent Review Committee (IRC) reviews the internal investigations that UCPD conducts and reports its conclusions and recommendations to the Provost, President, and Vice President for Administration & Chief Financial Officer as well as to the wider community via its annual report.

The University of Chicago Record

The University of Chicago Record, which is no longer in print, published official University reports, policies, addresses, including convocation and Aims of Education addresses, and more. The most recent series ran from 1967 to 2008. Issues from 2000 to 2008 are available online.
